DISTINGUISHED AUTHOR SERIES -- David Carle, accomplished author and biology teacher at the Eastern Sierra College Center, questions the notion that endless growth is possible because more water can always be found. It can't. Carle's 2004 "Introduction to Water in California," California Natural History Guides series, notes that it takes eight gallons of water to grow a tomato and 616 gallons to make a burger patty. FRIDAY NIGHT FLICKS -- Copia presents "Thrillville's Halloween Fiesta." STAND UP WITH BOB SARLATTE & FRIENDS -- Bob Sarlatte, noted Bay Area comedian and regular guest on Late Night with David Letterman, will be bringing his merry cast of characters to the Opera House for a night of comedy and hi-jinks. Appearing with Sarlatte will be the comedy team of Michael O'Brien and Geoff Bolt, both of the National Theater of the Deranged, and the always entertaining Johnny Steele, the 1992 San Francisco Comedy Competition champion. 'THE VAMPYRE' -- Dreamweavers presents this tale of Lord Ruthven, a charming but vicious vampire, who gains the confidence of Aubrey, a weak-willed young man. Through him Ruthven gains entrance to the home of Aubrey's aunt, the rich but sharp-tongued Lady Harwood. None of the pretty young women in the household (Lydia, Melissa and Constance) are able to resist his sinister charm, nor can any of the men defeat him. STAN ERHART TRIO -- San Francisco singer/songwriter Stan Erhart exists in that blues-rock space occupied by John Hiatt, Warren Zevon and Dave Alvin. With his weary, gravely voice, Erhart exists well outside of the pop mainstream, but should find fans among those who seek a rootsy, American style. 20-30 CLUB HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA -- The 30th annual Halloween Extravaganza, sponsored by the Napa Active 20-30 Club will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Napa Fairgrounds. The theme this year is "Halloween Hoe Down" and the musical entertainment will be the hot band, Hip Service, with its unique variety of crowd-pleasing dance hits from the '60s through the '90s. HOMETOWN HALLOWEEN PARADE -- Join others at the corner of Main and Pearl streets in Downtown Napa on Saturday for the second annual Hometown Halloween Parade beginning at 4 p.m. and ending in the Napa Town Center. Children of all ages are invited and parents can march with the young ones. Immediately following the parade, trick or treat at stores displaying black and orange balloons. WINGS IN THE NIGHT -- This pre-Halloween treat, offers an opportunity to see live bats up close and personal. Patricia Winters will present her ever popular program: Bats -- their mystery, folklore and reality; she will explain why they are important members of our ecosystem, how they control insects, preferred habitat and more. 10:30 a.m. at the Carolyn Parr Nature Center, Westwood Hills Park on Browns Valley Road. HUNTING CREEK BOULDER SCRAMBLE -- Join the Land Trust of Napa County on this late-season exploratory trip to Hunting Creek in the northeast corner of Napa County. HOWL 'O WEEN PARTY -- Bring your best friend to Napa Valley's first Howl 'O Ween party for dogs. HALLOWEEN HOOT 'N HOWL -- Drop in to Las Flores Community Center, 4300 Linda Vista Ave., from 5 to 8 p.m. for carnival games, non-candy prizes, crafts, ghoulishly decorated haunted house and a 7 p.m. costume contest. BOYS & GIRLS CLUB HALLOWEEN PARTY -- This free annual event is produced by Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley and sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Napa and other local businesses. TRICK OR TREAT, NAPA PREMIUM OUTLETS -- Ghosts, goblins and ghouls are invited to gather at Napa Premium Outlets for some Halloween fun from 3 to 7 p.m. Children are invited to trick-or-treat at participating merchants. Lions Club International will also be collecting used children's and adult prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses.

JAMMIN' AT JESSELS -- Jammin'@Jessel's takes place every Monday evening at Jessel Gallery, 1019 Atlas Peak Road in Napa. This unique event will feature a musical performance by Bobby Ray Watson the Jessel Jammers and wine poured by Boucaine. Come in costume for a chance to win prizes. 'MAMA MIA' -- Napa Valley College Trips and Tour will host an outing to see this infectious and funny musical that features over 20 of ABBA's best-known songs. CIGAR & WINE TASTING -- Carlos Torano Sr., of the renowned Carlos Torano Cigar Company, will be rolling Casa Torano cigars right in the store. DJANGO REINHARDT FESTIVAL -- Django Reinhardt, influenced by the likes of Louis Armstrong, was a gypsy virtuoso, called a genius by many. Created in 2000, the festival carries on Django's musical legacy and the creativity. This year the festival is lead by Gypsy guitarist Dorado Schmitt, his son Samson Schmitt, also on guitar, Parisian accordion whiz Pierre Blanchard and jazz violinist Brian Torff. MARK TAYLOR AND HIS FLAMENCO QUARTET -- The White Barn will host a weekend of classic guitar and flamenco on Nov. 4 and 5 at 8 p.m. Mark Taylor, an international recording artist and performer will share his love of the flamenco and Spanish classical music. Taylor has performed throughout the West Coast as a soloist, as well as part of an ensemble with notable flamenco dance companies such as "La Tania" and "Sangre Brava." $30 benefits the Ombudsman Program.
