More upside of uniforms

c Her Oct. 5 letter, "The upside of uniforms," was wonderful. I know that other kids sometimes make fun of the uniformed ones; but in reality they are missing so many of the good things about uniforms. I agree with Gabrielle; not having to worry about what to wear every day, or the peer pressure to look good or "look like everyone else in the fad of the day."

There are other things about uniforms that are so good. The uniform dress code is a code, with no exceptions and no rule-bending. Modesty, neatness and cleanliness rule the uniform code. No one really knows who is poor, or who is rich. Class-consciousness is not an issue. Getting to know each person for who they are, how they treat people, and how they express themselves academically and artistically is the important factor.

I am a nurse. I have worn uniforms all of my life; in grade school, high school, nursing school, and in all of my nursing jobs. I have been proud of all of those uniforms. I could always concentrate on the job at hand, rather than what I was wearing, or what others were wearing. As I said in my letter to Gabrielle, the one thing she said that I have to question is this: We don't express ourselves through what we wear? I think some people do. Let us think about that.
