An early Monday morning accident at the intersection of Solano and Wine Country avenues sent two motorists to the hospital with minor injuries, and one of them to jail.
Napa Police officers arrested Rhonda Kleese, 44, of Napa on suspicion of felony DUI resulting in injury. Kleese was driving south on Solano Avenue in a Dodge Stratus Sedan around 5 a.m. As she approached the intersection at Wine Country Avenue, she slammed into a car driven by a 70-year-old male driver, that was traveling east on Wine Country Avenue, Napa Police Sgt. Gil Gallegos said.
The impact caused the driver to lose control of his Cadillac Escalade and roll it over. Napa City Fire crews were dispatched to the scene of the accident and assisted the two motorists.
"The windows were broken out of it, and the cabin space was pretty much intact, but there were a lot of parts laying everywhere," said Napa City Fire Capt. Kim Suenram, describing the damage to the Escalade and the scene of the accident.
Gallegos said that both motorists sustained minor injuries and were taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital. Later, police officers determined that Kleese was DUI and took her to jail, police said.
Vehicle burglaries
A rash of vehicle burglaries has struck St. Helena.
According to a St. Helena Police Department press release, there have been at least four reported vehicle burglaries in St. Helena over the past few weeks.
The cities of Calistoga and Yountville have also reported car burglaries in their areas. On Friday, St. Helena Police arrested Kevin Guitas, 26, of St. Helena in connection with a vehicle burglary. Guitas allegedly took a purse from the unlocked car of a St. Helena woman and used her credit cards to purchase Safeway gift cards. A cashier notified police and they took Guitas into custody at a nearby gas station.
Police urge residents to refrain from leaving valuable items such as purses and laptop computers inside their vehicles and to make sure their vehicles are locked to dissuade burglars from breaking in. The St. Helena Police Department urges anyone who has questions, concerns or any information related to the burglaries to call 967-2850.
Speed checkpoint nets DUI drivers
The California Highway Patrol was busy over the weekend hunting down drunk drivers.
Officers set up DUI checkpoints on Friday and Saturday along westbound Trancas Street, near Silverado Trail, on Friday and Saturday. A total of 1,067 drivers went through the checkpoint and the CHP gave field sobriety tests to 27 motorists. Seven motorists were arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI.
