OAKLAND -- An Oakland family suffered a second tragedy in three months when a son was shot and killed in nearly the same spot where his father was gunned down in June.
Oakland police Sgt. Lou Cruz said it was too soon to determine whether the killings are linked.

Michael Cole Jr., 15, was standing with a group of about 10 other young people on 30th Street on Saturday when a man armed with a semiautomatic weapon opened fire on the group, police said.
Cole Jr. was the only one hit. He died at the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate, and Cruz said police aren't sure if Cole Jr. was the intended target.
Police described the teenager as a good kid who had never been in trouble and who counseled other children to stay away from gangs and violence.

"It looks like he was one of those kids trying to do the right thing in a bad area," said Sgt. Mark Dunakin, who is investigating the killing.

Cole Sr., 34, was shot to death June 3 in front of the same house on the same street, police said.

Jermain Givens, 23, is charged in the killing. Authorities said that killing was sparked by a feud between the opposing groups./AP
