More than 100 mourners showed up Monday afternoon to say their good-byes to a Napa mother of four who was shot to death less than two weeks ago.
Friends and family members filled Hopewell Baptist Church in Napa and filed by the white casket where Sandra Isabel Hernandez, 31, was laid. Many of them smoothed Hernandez's dark brown hair and kissed her forehead. Others carefully placed flowers in the open coffin. And almost everyone dabbed their eyes with tissues.
Seated in the front pew, Hernandez's parents Maria and Ramon Preciado were repeatedly hugged by their daughter's friends, many of whom knew the Napa woman for most of her life.
Hernandez, also know as Sandra Dodson, was found dead around 5 p.m., July 31, at a residence in the 6200 block of Dry Creek Road where she rented a room from the elderly owner of the house.
Later that night, Onesimo Olmedo Garcia, 30, was arrested at a Fairfield house he shares with his brother and sister-in-law. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the county jail on $10 million bail.
Hernandez and Garcia had known each other for about 15 years, and during that time, they had a dating relationship. At the time of Garcia's arrest, he was on probation for felony domestic violence or a case in which Hernandez was the victim.
Hernandez, who had lived in Napa since she was 2, had a 13-year-old son and three other children, 2, 4, 6, by her ex-husband.
The older boy's father, Juan Salciedo, was one of the pallbearers at the funeral.
"Sandra and I met when we 12 or 13. We were young lovers. We had remained friends since then. She was always smiling. Sandra was outgoing and very outspoken. She was very protective of our son. He was her first born and she made sure nothing ever hurt him," Salciedo said. "My son is handling the loss of his mother pretty good. It's not easy to lose your mom. This is just such a terrible tragedy. This domestic violence thing has to stop."
Many of those who attended the funeral were wearing T-shirts with Hernandez's photo on the back.
Melissa Flores was one of them.
"I knew Sandra for about 15 years. She was one of my best friends. She was a very caring person and really loved her children. She was always talking and bragging about them," Flores said. "Sandra had a smile you could never forget and a warm and giving heart."
Letty Duran agreed. She and Hernandez's friendship goes back to when they were classmates in the eighth grade.
"We were real close in middle and high school. Later she would bring her kids over to my house and our kids would play. Sandra was a devoted mother, who was extremely proud of her kids," Duran said. "I feel like I have lost a part of me. Sandra was fun-loving. Her smile was one thing I will always remember about her."
Hernandez was one of 10 siblings. Her 13-year-old sister Rosario remembered her big sister.
"She was really trying to get her life going. She was trying to buy a home. Because she is so much older than me, I didn't get to see her all that often. And I really feel bad about that. I wish I could see her just one more time and tell her that I really love her," Rosario said, tears trickling down her cheeks. "She was too young to die and no one should die the way she did."
During the service, many friends and family members shared their memories of Hernandez.
Her brother Octavio talked about his sister's "amazing spirit and good heart. Sandra loved life. And to celebrate her life, each year on her birthday, we will all get together and have a barbecue. We will share our thoughts and memories of my sister," he said.
The night Hernandez died, deputies responded to report of gunshots at the Dry Creek Road home.
Deputies found Hernandez' body at the scene. Garcia had fled the residence in a Lexus, which he drove through a steel fence in his attempt to get away. Investigators were able to track Garcia to Fairfield after talking to people who said Hernandez and Garcia had been together that day.
Napa County Sheriff's Lt. Jean Donaldson said drugs may have played a role in Hernandez' death, but officers are still awaiting results from toxicology tests taken from the victim and suspect.
Garcia has pleaded not guilty to murder. His preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 23.
