The Napa murder victim who died from gunshot wounds Sunday had several dealings with Napa County law enforcement.

Sandra Isabel Hernandez, 31, also know as Sandra Dodson, was found dead around 5 p.m., Sunday, at a residence in the 6200 block of Dry Creek Road where she rented a room from the elderly owner of the house.
Later that night, Onesimo Olmedo Garcia, 30, was arrested at a Fairfield house he shares with his brother and sister-in-law.

On Monday, Garcia was arraigned in Napa Superior Court and charged with the murder of Hernandez. At the time he was arrested, Garcia was on probation for domestic violence. The victim of the domestic violence was Hernandez.
Hernandez and Garcia knew each other for about 15 years, and at one point they had a romantic relationship, according to testimony Hernandez provided when Garcia was facing the domestic violence charge.

Hernandez was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and moved to Napa when she was 2. She has a 13-year-old child and three other children, ages 2, 4 and 6, with a man to whom she was married for several years.
Court records show Hernandez was arrested in April 1997 for possession of a controlled substance and being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced in December 1997.

Also in April 1997, Hernandez was arrested and convicted of misdemeanor possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. She was fined $250.

Hernandez was convicted in April 2004 of illegal possession of a hypodermic syringe and was fined $430. In May 2004, she was charged with assault and battery. She pleaded guilty and was ordered to serve three years probation.

Garcia is no stranger to Napa County law enforcement, either.

In addition to his domestic violence conviction, he was convicted of petty theft in 1996, possession of a controlled substance in April 1997, possession of a false government documents in March 1998 and driving under the influence in April 2001.

The day Hernandez was killed, a woman who also lives in the house heard gunshots, sheriff's Lt. Jean Donaldson said, adding she did not witness the shooting. The woman called 911.

When deputies arrived they found Hernandez dead at the scene. Garcia had left in a Lexus, which he drove through a steel fence in his attempt to flee the scene, Donaldson said. Investigators found the Lexus earlier this week in a creek off the 4400 block of Redwood Road. They are processing the car for evidence in connection with the murder.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information how Garcia made it from Redwood Road to Fairfield to call the sheriff's department at 253-4591.

Donaldson said Garcia was not armed when he was arrested. Detectives found weapons in the Dry Creek Road home, but have not confirmed if one of them is the murder weapon.

Although Donaldson said drugs may have played a role in the homicide, he could not confirm that until results from the toxicology tests taken from the victim and suspect are available.

Garcia appeared in court Thursday. Judge Stephen Kroyer appointed Napa defense attorney Merv Lernhart to represent Garcia.

Garcia, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, is being held on $10 million bail in the county jail. His preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 23.
